The big money is made through the service, the phone works as consumer bait. The basic supply and demand theory applies to this question along with profitable customer aquisition.

They are mostly used for convenience. It is easier for people to just have a phone with all the numbers they need for their contacts.
And it's mobile - people have the flexibility to take it anywhere with them (this adds on the convenience of them.)

1. Portability
People like to talk. It only makes sense that if a device lets people talk wherever they want, people will like this device.
2. Text Messaging
People can now fire off messages more quickly than a phone call. Text messaging also allows people to communicate at times and in places where they would normally not be able to (e.g. business meetings, school, etc.)
3. Customization
People have styles and personalities. What better way to share this with the world than with that new ringtone you just bought?
4. Built-in cameras
Camera phones allow people to shoot and share moments quickly and easily.

∙ 13y agoi would probably have to say that it is because of two major words: instantaneous & access. People seem to have a penchant or obession for having to have instantaneous information, and access to everything (the lastest emails, sports scores, etc.) on their cellphones...
Also, for the more common reason that they are simply extremely convinient: you can take them pratically anywhere and always be in touch.
just my two cents... others may have a different opinion.
And because most people think that if everyone has one they should to just t be cool i dont get it...

∙ 12y agocell phones r for emergencies. if u have a cell fone it makes u cooler. but u pay 30$ a month. that's not worth it i think but its still good. use trak fones. there good for emergencies. u pay for the minutes as u go. babble bug is a place u can buy minutes when eer u want but it doesnt work w/ us cellular. and u have to pay the real cost insted of the contract cost.
by the way any one know if the rumor is a good phone. im buying it
LOL I don't know if it makes you cooler or not, but I don't have a home phone anymore. I just use Corr Wireless and have unlimited talking and texting for 55 dollars a month... That is not expensive :)
