They react with water like the alkaline metal but does not change or melt with fire.
The alkaline part of the name comes from the fact that these metal form alkaline solutions, when they react with water. The earth part was added to differentiate these from the group one metals. Alchemists called them earth metals because they though that their oxides were new elements.
In the middle age the oxides of these metals (metals which are not known in time) are called alkaline earths: alkalinebecause these oxides react with water forming an alkaline solution and earths because in the past non-metallic compounds were called earths.

Group 2 contains soft metals that are more metallic in character compared to Group 1 and are silver in color. Although characteristics are maintained homologous throughout the group, the heavier metals such as Ca, Sr, Ba, and Ra are almost as reactive as the Group 1 Alkali Metals. All of the elements in Group 2 have two electrons in their valence shell giving them an oxidation state of +2. This enables the metals to easily lose electrons which increases their stability and allow them to form compounds via ionic bonds. The following diagram shows the location of these metals in the Periodic Table.

Because alkalies are completely water soluble bases and bases of 2nd group are partially water soluble so they are alkaline (alkali like) secondly the earth crust mostly consists of carbonates of these metals (earth forming compounds) so they are ALKALINE EARTH METALS.

Firstly, group 1 elements are called alkali metals. These are all very light metals that tarnish in air, and react vigorously to violently with water, releasing hydrogen, and producing strongly alkaline solutions.

Group 2 elements are the alkaline earths. "Earths" is a pre-1800 term for what we would now call metal oxides. At that time it was used for substances that are powdery rather than salt-like, are only sparingly soluble in water, and that are not decomposed when heated strongly in a furnace. The characteristic alkaline earth is lime -- calcium oxide. It actually reacts with water to make calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), which is only slightly soluble, and makes an alkaline solution of lime water. The other elements in the family do not quite follow this pattern: strontium oxide (strontian) is very similar to calcium oxide, but barium hydroxide is quite soluble and strongly alkaline.

Magnesium oxide (magnesia) has little tendency to react with water, and is quite insoluble, while beryllium oxide, similarly insoluble, is not at all alkaline. Nevertheless, the term "alkaline earth" has traditionally been applied to this whole family.

The 2nd A group of periodic table contains elements which are common in earth crust and their oxides and hydroxides are partially soluble in water forming the alkaline solutions so they are known as the Alkaline earth metals while the name halogens is derived from Latin words 'Halous' and 'Genous' which means sea salt producers it is due to the fact that the sea salts mostly contain Chlorine , Bromine and Iodine.
