When it was established in 1607 it was a military style of organization. The 104 men were sent by investors to make them money on the investment of sending them to VA. This was not suppose to develop into a colony. The men established the fort in an Native American empire of 14,000 and built on the worse land in the area. Within six months only 34 men were still alive. It wasn't until the introduction of tobacco by Rolfe that the colony became a viable growing town.

The first settlers of Jamestown came to America in 1607 under the auspices of the Virginia Company. They were led by Captain John Smith when he arrived later on a second ship. Many were seeking fortune and did not appreciate the work required to sustain the colony. Smith was forced by injury to leave the colony in 1609, and during the following winter, more than 2/3 of the population died or starved. The colony was barely saved from abandonment in 1610 by the timely arrival of new colonists and supplies from England, under the command of the new governor, Thomas West (Baron DeLaWarr or "Lord Delaware").

They were English upper crust, adventurers, a few jailbirds, and some soldiers. None were farmers nor ready for the conditions they found.
