James Monroe, the 5th US president, was elected in 1816 with little opposition and ran without opposition in 1820 . The Era of Good Feelings lasted from the end of the War of 1812 until sometime from 1820 to 1828. The administration of James Monroe lasted from 1817 until 1825, and so he is most closely associated with the Era of Good Feelings, although he did not personally cause it. This was an era that was relatively free from political tensions, but tensions started to rise again with the Missouri Compromise in 1820 and by the election of 1828 tension was very high. James Madison was president at the beginning of the period.
