What travels from your brain to your skeletal muscle cells when you move?

When you decide to move, an electrical signal called an action potential is generated in your brain. This signal travels along your neurons and reaches the skeletal muscle cells via motor neurons. At the neuromuscular junction, a chemical called acetylcholine is released, which stimulates the muscle fibers to contract and initiate movement.

What do nerves do?

A neuron is like a relay switch - it receives signals from other neurons and depending on the nature of the signals, the neuron may then 'fire' a signal of its own, stay silent, or become inhibited. This is like binary code - i.e.,"on" and "off" states. A neuron can oscillate between these states in a variety of frequencies. So the range of computations that even a single neuron can perform is impressive. Now, consider that this sort of thing is happening billions of times every second all throughout the nervous system and you can intuitively grasp just how complex the patterns of signals would become. In fact, somewhere in those patterns is what we would call our 'mind' and our 'intelligence' and so on. And this is all because of a large collection of neurons (~100 billion at birth) relaying signals to each other through a multitude of pathways (trillions).

What does the multimodal association cortex do?

It allows us to tie information that we receive to previous experience and knowledge and helps us decide what action to take.

What are places in a cell cycle that control whether the cell will divide?

Under ordinary / usual conditions, a Cell will decide to divide when it reaches a certain size, and is reticent to get bigger. See above for the Short Answer!

What neurons carry impulses from the brain or spinal cord to other organs and cause muscles to contract?

Impulses from the brain go mostly through the channels in the spinal cord and control most everything that goes on in the body. It is a two way street with information generated chemicals being carried throughout the body. The brain uses neurons to decide what information is acted upon.

How does the nervous system respond to stimuli?

They FIRE, when a SUFFICIENT stimulus is received. A neuron can receive a stimulus from a SENSORY INPUT, or from ANOTHER NEURON. When a SENSORY NEURON is stimulated by some physical event, such as touch, sound, light, etc, sensory receptors on the neurons cell membrane translate the physical stimulus into electrical impulses by causing changes in the balance or proportions of electrically charged IONS. When a neuron is stimulated by ANOTHER NEURON, the stimulating neuron (or, "pre-synaptic" neuron) has released NEUROTRANSMITTER chemicals into the space between the two neurons (the SYNAPSE), as a consequence of its own activation (firing); the neurotransmitters then bind to receptors on the post-synaptic neuron, usually on a DENDRITE, causing Sodium ion pores to open, which allow Sodium ions to enter the neuron which has now been "stimulated". These Sodium ions then electrostatically "bump" other Sodium ions, which bump others, etc, along the dendrites and cell body (soma), in a process called ELECTROTONIC CONDUCTION, which has the property of happening quickly, but looses strength as it moves along. When this impulse reaches the beginning of the neurons AXON, at a location called the AXON HILLOCK, this impulse is summed or added with any other similar impulses, and if it reaches a THRESHOLD value, it will cause the axon to FIRE, which means that a slightly different (but still ionically electrical) neural impulse will be generated along the axon, called an ACTION POTENTIAL. And the original answer to this question was: Neurons send vital messages to the brain so it can decide what to do.
