The rockies are much higher. the highest point in the Appalachian is in NC Mount Mitchell - 6,684 feetwhile the highest point in the Rocky mountains is in Colorado Mount Elbert - 14,433 feet

But this is not the highest point in the lower 48. That would be in the sierra Nevada range in California Mount Whitney - 14,494 feet

The Rockies have higher peaks than the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian mountains are ancient geologically and so have worn down due to erosion, weather and so on. At 6,684 ft., Mt. Mitchell is the highest point in the Appalachians. The Rockies are younger and so have some very high peaks. The Rockies' highest peak is Colorado's Mt. Elbert at 14,440 ft.

Colorado has 53 mountain peaks that rise over 14,000 feet above sea level and the highest is mount Elbert at 14,433. North Caroline has Mt Michell the highest peak in the Appalachian mountain and is only 6,684 ft above sea level so the Colorado Rockies are much bigger

The Rocky mountains dwarf the Appalachians by altitude; the tallest mountain in the Appalachian mountain range is Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet/2,037 meters. By contrast, the highest peak in the Rockies is Mount Elbert at 14,440 feet/4,401 m meters, more than twice the elevation of Mount Mitchell.

Some theories suggest that the Appalachians were, hundreds of millions of years ago, the tallest mountain chain on the planet, taller even than the present-day Himalayas, but that erosion has worn them down to their present levels and continues to do so. The Rocky Mountains are much younger, but they too are being eroded by time.
