The space between neurons is called a synapse; it is where chemical information in the form of neurotransmitters is passed between neurons. Some neurons are connected electrically; the spaces between those neurons are called gap junctions.

The synapse, which is usually a chemical synapse, but may be an electrical synapse.

In the case of a chemical synapse, or synaptic cleft, chemical messengers called neurotransmitters travel across a very small space between cells, sending a message to change the membrane voltage potential of the post-synaptic cell.

In an electrical synapse the pre-synaptic cell is connected to the post-synaptic cell by channels, allowing voltage changes to pass freely from the pre-synaptic cell to the post-synaptic cell.
