Cations have lost electrons to have the same electron gas configuration as a noble gas, so its highest energy level has the right number of electrons. Each row of elements on the periodic table represents an energy level, so the first row has 1 energy level, the second row has energy levels 1 and 2, and so on.

ions are about gaining or losing electrons. they are described as charged particles

metals lose electrons hence they lose electrons of an orbit, while non metals gain electrons thus getting a full outer shell.

hence the ions of metal will have less electrons while that of a non metal will have more..
