St. Nicholas of Myra came from a Greek colony in Asia Minor in what is known today as Turkey.
Saint Nicholas is the common name for Saint Nicholas, a Lycian saint and Bishop of Myra in Anatolia (in modern-day Antalya province, Turkey, though then it was a Greek-speaking Roman Province). He was born during the third century in the village of Patara. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, but is now commonly identified with Santa Claus.

St Nicholas was born in Greece (now part of southern Turkey) during the third century. Brought up in a devout Christian family, Nicholas's parents taught him values of generosity and selflessness, practices to which he adhered throughout his life. He was known in particular for his generosity to people in need (he had a reputation for secretly giving to the poor), his love for children, and his concern for sailors who often worked under some difficult conditions. Nicholas was persecuted for his faith under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and died on 6 December 343. A legend began which stated that, after his death, manna (the nutritious substance God miraculously provided for sustenance for the Israelites during their 40 year desert sojourn) formed upon his grave. This manna was said to have healing properties, spawning a new era of pious devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, and of course came to be known as St Nicholas Day. St Nicholas was never actually officially canonised, as this was not a common practice in the early church. It was common custom in those days for his devoted followers to simply spread word of his generosity and righteousness, thereby creating a larger following. By the Middle Ages, he came to be venerated as "people's saint", and churches and villages were named after him. Thus, his "evolution" into sainthood occurred over a period of hundreds of years. I think from the Norse people to the Germans then Catholicism to the Protestant churches ultimately to most all secular Christians rather they know it or not.The same folk that will call you a cult just cause you are willing to keep the commandments of God not understanding they were duped in or around 325 ad.Thank you for your interest.

Actually the "Norse", the Romans and all of the Pagan religions of Europe had St. Nicholas day originate from Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra who lived early in the fourth century. The "325 ad" is the approximate date of the Council of Nicea that Roman leader Constantine called for all Christians in order to unify their teachings. The original celebration was on December the 6th, the day he died. He was known for his kindnesses to children and for giving them gifts for no reason. Christianity spread throughout Europe by the 7th century. While Christianity adopted the Roman celebration of Saturnia and the Pagan celebration of the Yule - the new year, both the Romans and the Pagans adopted the idea of giving children gifts from the Catholic tradition of honoring Saint Nicholas. While some societies called this gift giver by different names - such as "Father Christmas" who for hundreds of years was a "dark" God, and Odin who was also a "dark" God, "Father Christmas", "Odin", "Sinderklaus", "KristKindle" and all of the other "givers of gifts to children" originate with St. Nicholas.

St. Nicholas was a 3rd-4th century bishop in the town of Myra in Asia Minor, what is known as Turkey today. He was noted for his generosity to the poor. Most of the time his gifts were given in secrecy. He is also noted for bringing three young boys back to life who had been murdered and stuffed in a barrel of brine, thus his patronage of children.
St. Nicholas was a 4century Greek saint. He was Bishop of Myra hence he is also known by the name Nikolaos of Myra (part of modern Turkey).Nikolaos was said to have worked many miracles so is aslo called Nikolaos the Wonderworker, and he had a reputation for giving gifts. These gifts included leaving coins in shoes left out for him,and because of this he became the model of the modern Santa Claus

The real St. Nicholas was a 4th century Catholic bishop in Myra, a town in Asia Minor, now known as Turkey. He was known for his generosity to the poor and love of children. He did most of his good deeds in secrecy. His feast day is celebrated on December 6. Somewhere along the line he was abducted in recent centuries and turned into a fictional St. Nicholas - Santa Claus.
