Long time ago, in Barangay Masagana (Pampanga today), there was a couple named Mand Dodong and Aling Iska who wanted to have a daughter. Their wish was granted and gave birth to Maria. Maria was very beautiful, industrious, and kindhearted but she was very shy that she would not go out from their house.

Maria had a flower garden where she takes care of the plants to patiently and tenderly since it was her source of enjoyment and happiness.

One day, bandits came and plundered their whole town. Fearing their daughter's safety, they hid Maria in the garden while Aling Iska hid herself in their house. When the bandits came, they hit Mang Dodong and Aling Iska in the head making them lose the consciousness.

After they regained their consciousness and the bandits already left their town, the couple searched for their daughter. Unfortunately, they weren't able to find her even in the bushes but instead found a little plant that is very sensitive that when you touch it, its leaves would immediately close.

The couple looked at it for quite some time and came to the belief that it was their daughter, Maria. They called the plant "makahiya" which means, "touch me not," like their daughter who was very shy.

Aling Iska wept uncontrollably and to Mang Dondong's amazement, every tear was transformed into a small and rosy flower of the new plant they found in the garden.

Shyness is nice, but shyness can stop you from doing all the things in life that you'd like to.
