The first ever public broadcast was in 1929 from the BBC studio in London. The broadcast used John Logie Baird's television system that was first demonstrated in 1925.

In 1939, RCA began commercial broadcasting in the US. Although Philo Farnsworth demostrated the fully electronic system in 1929, further development and legal disputes delayed the service by 10 years.

Why do uhf and vhf relate to television broadcasts?

Early television broadcasts were transmitted on VHF (very high frequency) radio channels. They moved to UHF (ultra high frequency) and have remained on that band since. These bands are used for terrestrial broadcasts. Satellite broadcasts use even higher frequencies.

What defines live television?

Live television broadcasts are broadcasts that are seen by the viewer as they are happening, as opposed to delayed broadcasts, that are recorded, edited and then broadcast to the viewer at a later date or time. An example of live television broadcasts would be the nightly news or a presidential speech. Delayed, non-live television would be weekly dramatic shows seen nightly in prime time or a movie of the week.
