At that time it was believed to have ben built for $ 6000-8000 dollars

In most provincial cities prices were much lower. At that time there was generally a marked difference in price between new and old houses. Older houses were regarded as secondhand and cost less ...
In the 1940s there was very little house building because of World War 2 and in the late 1940s there was still a shortage of building materials. Prices were somewhat higher, but you could still get a really good new house in London for about £4,000-£4,500.
(At that time £1 was about US$4).
