He did not accept insults from European governments who still thought of the US as something of an upstart to be ignored if it was to their advantage to do so. He sent a warship to the Kingdom of Two Sicylies when they refused to pay a debt they owed us, and we came close to war with France when they waffled on a payment they had agreed to make. But they eventually paid and his strong stand gave him and future presidents greater respect and influence in Europe. He believed in world trade.
