Cation

A way to remember is that you know electrons are negatively charged, and if an atom loses an electron it becomes positively charged, pos=paws cats have paws positive ions are cations. Anions sounds like anti-ions anti is negative anions are negative.

A cation i.e positive ion is formed when atoms loses an electron. As no. of proton and electron are equal in neutral atom. As electron is removed the proton becomes greater in no. So a positive ion is formed.

Electrons are negatively charged, so if a neutral atom loses one, the atom becomes positively charged. Positively charged atoms are called cations (if it gains an electron, it becomes more negatively charged and becomes and anion).

When an atom loses one or more electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion, called a cation. In a neutral atom, the numbers of protons and electrons are equal. However, when an atom loses electrons, the number of protons remains the same. This results in more positively charged protons than negatively charged electrons, so the overall charge on the ion is positive.

For example, an aluminum atom lose three electrons when forming its cation. A neutral aluminum atom has 13 protons and 13 electrons. When the aluminum atom loses 3 electrons, the resulting aluminum ion has 10 electrons and 13 protons. Since there are now 3 more protons than electrons, it develops an ion with a 3+ charge.

If an atom loses an electron it loses a negative charge. This will mean the atom now has a positive charge overall because the electron is no longer there to cancel it out.

What happens when a atom forms an ion?

The atom had either lost or gained one or more electrons forming and ion. Thus the ion has an overall electric charge.

A charged particle forms when an atom transfers electrons is an?

A charged particle that forms when an atom transfers electrons is an ion. An atom that loses an electron forms a positively charged ion called a cation; an atom that gains an electron forms a negatively charged ion called an anion.
