Strictly speaking thunder doesn't make a sound. Thunder IS the sound made by lightning.
Thunder is always proceeded by lightning and the sound is literally the sound of the bolt of lightning ripping through the air at an incredible speed ionising the air, rapidly raising temperature, breaking the sound barrier and physically hitting the earth.
The sound can be described as a rumble, a screech, a boom or a crack depending upon your proximity to the lightning and its type.
Thunder doesn't make a sound--thunder is a sound. It's the sound made by lightening. The electricity in lightening causes the rapid expansion of hot air, which creates shock waves: i.e. thunder.
they make a huge clap sound like a million doors falling all at once
When lightning strikes, those soundwaves are what we hear... The sound comes from the lightning actually, it doesnt come from thunder, "thunder" is what we hear...

Thunder is a sound made by lightning, where the sudden increase in pressure and heat from the lightning causes a rapid expansion of air that resulted in a loud sound.
It travels because of:The boom efect and what it does and how sound travels.
Thunder is the sound of lightning, because lightning moves faster then sound it takes a few seconds for the sound to catch up. So there is no sound of thunder, thunder is just the sound of lightning.
You are wrong. Thunder is the noise made when the lightning causes the air to heat up and expand suddenly. When this explodes we hear the sound we call thunder.
Thunder results from the rapid expansion of air along a lightning strike.
