This makes the glass a) easier to break and b) more likely to break cleanly where the score is instead of randomly, leaving jagged edges. Pressure is applied on the OPPOSITE side of the score; remember to protect your hands with heavy gloves and/or a thick cloth.
Large diameter tubing requires different methods; the "score and snap" technique tends not to work so well.
