The outer core is a layer of molten metal that surrounds the inner core. The outer core lies at a depth from 2900 km to 5150 km. It's composed of liquid iron and nickel along with small amounts of lighter elements, with temperatures ranging from 4,000 degrees C to 6,100 degrees C near the boundary with the inner core.

The Earth's outer core:

  • is composed primarily of liquid iron and nickel
  • extends from a depth of 1,806 to 3,219 miles from the surface
  • comprises 30.8 percent of Earth's mass
  • temperatures range from 7,200-11,000 F
  • controls Earth's magnetic field which protects us from the sun's solar winds
  • is in a liquid state
