Often, leaving the fan in the ON position will tend to distribute conditioned air more evenly through a house. This works well for cooling in particular. The furnace fan motor is designed for continuous operation, so running it 24/7 will not harm it, but it will cause the motor to use more electricity. It may reduce compressor operation somewhat, however. Another reason to run the fan continuously is to pass more air through accessories like electronic air cleaners, UV lamps, or HEPA filters.
Running the fan continuously in winter may tend to feel drafty. You'll have to experiment to see how it feels.
