Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star and the nearest star to us other than the sun. It is about 4.2 light years away and is much dimmer than the sun, too dim to be seen with the naked eye. It is unclear whether it is part of the Alpha Centauri system. Sirius is a binary star system consisting of a white dwarf stellar remnant and a white main sequence star about 25 times brighter than the sun. Sirius is one of our closest stellar neighbors at about 8.6 light years away. It is the brightest star in the night sky.

Are the stars that appear the brightest are also the closest?

No. The sun is very close to us so it seems very bright. There are a lot of stars that are much brighter than it, but are very far away. It is the same with the other stars. There are some very bright ones that are very far away and some dimmer ones that are closer to us. After the sun, the next brightest star is Proxima Centauri. The brightest star in the night sky that we see is Sirius, which is close, but much further away than Proxima Centauri.

What are earth's NEARs?

Our own Sun is the closest, of course. Beyond that, the next closest star is the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, which is too dim to see with the naked eye, at 4.2 light years. Next closest are the two stars in the Alpha Centauri system, at 4.5 LY. See the link below for the list of nearer stars. The closest really bright star is Sirius A.

Is Sirius closer to earth than Rigel?

Sirius is a star, not a planet, and it is not the closest star to Earth or anywhere near being the closest (technically the closest star to Earth is the sun, and the next closest is Proxima Centauri).
