Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star and the nearest star to us other than the sun. It is about 4.2 light years away and is much dimmer than the sun, too dim to be seen with the naked eye. It is unclear whether it is part of the Alpha Centauri system. Sirius is a binary star system consisting of a white dwarf stellar remnant and a white main sequence star about 25 times brighter than the sun. Sirius is one of our closest stellar neighbors at about 8.6 light years away. It is the brightest star in the night sky.

What is the 3rd closest star on earth?

ANSWER:With the Sun being the first, Proxima Centauri is the next closest at 4.22 light years away in the Alpha Centauri star system. See the related link for more information.

How far away is the next nearest star?

Technically speaking the closest star to Earth is the sun which is about 93 000 000 miles (150 million kilometers) away. After that the next nearest star is Alpha Centauri and it is 4.37 light years away from our sun.

What kind of stars are about the same size as Earth?

Our own Sun is the closest, of course. Beyond that, the next closest star is the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, which is too dim to see with the naked eye, at 4.2 light years. Next closest are the two stars in the Alpha Centauri system, at 4.5 LY. See the link below for the list of nearer stars. The closest really bright star is Sirius A.

What are the names of stars in the galaxies?

There are billions of stars in galaxies, so it is not possible to provide a comprehensive list of their names. Some well-known stars include our Sun (Sol), Alpha Centauri, Sirius, Betelgeuse, and Proxima Centauri. Different stars in the same galaxy are typically given designations based on their location and other characteristics.

What is the nearest star to Earth?

The 'Sun' is the nearest Star. Other than the somewhat snarky answer "the sun": Here's a list of the 10 closest stars, with their distance in light-years: Proxima Centauri - 4.22 Alpha Centauri A - 4.37 Alpha Centauri B - 4.37 Barnard's Star - 5.96 Wolf 359 - 7.78 Sirius A - 8.58 Sirius B- 8.58 Luyten-8 A - 8.73 Luyten-8 B - 8.73 Ross 154 - 9.68

Are the stars that appear the brightest are also the closest?

No. The sun is very close to us so it seems very bright. There are a lot of stars that are much brighter than it, but are very far away. It is the same with the other stars. There are some very bright ones that are very far away and some dimmer ones that are closer to us. After the sun, the next brightest star is Proxima Centauri. The brightest star in the night sky that we see is Sirius, which is close, but much further away than Proxima Centauri.

Is Sirius closer to earth than Rigel?

Sirius is a star, not a planet, and it is not the closest star to Earth or anywhere near being the closest (technically the closest star to Earth is the sun, and the next closest is Proxima Centauri).

Why does Sirius star look brighter than alpha centauri star?

Because it actuall IS brighter.

Sirius is twice as far from earth as which star?

Probably one of the Alpha Centauri stars at about 4.3 light years.

Where is memory alpha star rek online?

In the top-right corner of the Alpha-Centauri sector, which is just above the Sirius sector.

What are alpha centauri and Sirius?

Alpha Centauri (the brightest star in the constellation Centaurus) is the closest star to earth, and is actually a double star system - when it's small companion star is on "our side" of Alpha C, it is actually closest. The system is about 4.3 light years away. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, a white giant, and is about 9 light years away.
