Maps show spatial relationships between different things. For example a map showing penguins and polar bears would make it very clear that they live far apart. A map showing lions and zebra would show them close together, with the lions trying to get as near as possible to the zebra. One famous map showed outbreaks of cholera in London and the location of public water pumps. It was instantly clear to everyone that the disease was coming from a polluted pump.
Similarly, the famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison used a map to show where German U-boats were lying in wait for merchant ships. No-one had shown that before on a map. Now the Navy knew where to hunt for the submarines. Strange but true.

∙ 14y agoMaps help people my giving the location,latitude and longitude, and the direction of someplace. Maps are important because without them people would more likely be lost and not know where to go. -KK

∙ 10y agoThe function of a map is to give a birds-eye view of the ground, even when hidden from view by high-ground and forests, etc. It also lets a person plot a route from A to B, and to know the distance to be travelled.
