A Border Collie is a herding dog. It is normally black ad white, but can also be tri colored, red or Merle. They are intense, hard working dogs and need a lot of activity. They are very trainable and are widely regarded as the most intelligent dog breed.
The Australian Shepherd is a herding dog which, interestingly, does not have its origins in Australia. They are commonly confused with either the Border Collie or the Blue Heeler / Red Heeler, but are a completely different breed.
The Australian Shepherd is often thought to have been originated in the United States, but this, too, is wrong. Its ancestors came from the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France: these were the dogs used to work the Merino sheep which formed the foundation for the Australian sheep industry. Sources vary on the next step in its evolution: it either came to the US with the merino sheep that were imported from Australia, or it came directly with the Basque sheep herders themselves. It was then developed and refined as a herding dog on ranches in the US.
Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent and very hard-working. Not only are they used as herding dogs in both Australia and the US, but they have also been deployed as guard dogs, for search and rescue, and for police work. They are very active, and if used as a family pet, may instinctively try to herd the family as well as the family pets.
Australian Shepherds are medium to large in size, with a medium long coat. They come in various colour combinations of black, blue merle, red and red merle, all with a white chest, a white blaze on the forehead, and white legs.
They have a different name and look different. Also different features
