When you don't sleep, then your brain doesn't have the well needed rest that it require in order to get the blood in and out of the brain. Plus you are quite groggy and tired as a result of low brain oxygen the next day.
Sleep is very important for mental and physical reform. Lack of sleep can cause physical and mental damage. There can an underlying reason for insomnia so its better to check with physician.
