Japan changed from a feudal society and moved into industrialization. The money garnered from this enabled them to move forward to colonization for Natural Resources much the way Europe had done. In pursuit of influence over China, Japan launched a war which resulted in a win that ceded them Taiwan, southern Manchuria and the Pescadores.
