Best Answer

"Circum-" means "around", and "oral" refers to the mouth. So "circumoral" would mean "around the mouth" or something similar.

Do starfish have a brain?

Starfish do not have true brains. They have a cluster of nerves called ganglia that form a ring in the centre of the starfish which is called the circumoral nerve ring. A radial nerve extends at right angles from the circumoral nerve ring into each arm. With the exception of eye spots in the tip of each arm there are no specialised sense organs (such as eyes or ears). These eyespots sense light and send back messages to the main nerve centre. The starfish is a primitive organism and as such does not make conscious decisions to eat or sleep. Changes in light intensity will cause different firing rates of nerves, which may equate to sleep. Minute traces of odours from clams and mussels or from dead fish will also excite the nervous system and will initiate the feeding cycle. A lot of these "sleep/wake" cycles or feeding cycles will be dictated by changes in light intensity or tidal rise and fall. All the best Starfish do not have true brains.
