It might be different for you, but with my insurance AD&D stands for Accidental Death and Dismemberment, and the limits are the maximum amount of compensation that can be distributed to you upon fulfillment of the policy.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment: A certain amount would be paid if death was result of an accident, rather than a disease, for example. Dismemberment would be if somebody lost a hand (or use of the hand) or foot or leg, etc.

Reasons for AD&D Insurance?

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance has long been a tool for the wealthy and famous, but it is increasingly used by ordinary people to protect their finances in case of a terrible accident. Death means not only funeral costs, it also means lost income for the family left behind by the deceased. Dismemberment -- the loss of a limb or other body part -- could severely impair someone's ability to earn a living. Losing an arm or leg could be career-ending for some professions, like athletes or laborers. Purchasing AD&D insurance is an effective way to guard against financial losses from death or dismemberment.
