A cirrus cloud is a thin and wispy cloud composed of ice crystals. They are the highest of clouds, forming in the upper troposphere. They may be thick enough to partially obscure the sunlight, or so tenuous as to be nearly invisible.

Thick, but wispy at the same time. Thick, white and fluffy would make it a Cirrocumulus cloud. So they're thick, but also wispy at the same time, and don't have to be white. They can be, gray, white, or even dark black.

Cirrostratus: These are thin sheetlike high clouds that often cover the whole sky. They are so thin the sun and the moon can be seen through them. They usually come 12-24 hours before a snow storm.

"Stratus" is the Latin word for layer or blanket. Stratus clouds form a low layer that can cover the entire sky like a blanket, bringing generally bleak, dull, and gray weather.
