Pirates were private sailors who attacked and robbed ships, and plundered villages for their "loot", or stolen valuables. Some classic pirates were actually mercenaries or privateers who were enlisted to harrass the shipping of rival countries, especially during the wars in Europe. However, the practice was eventually prohibited (in 1856) because many pirates did not particularly care whose ships they attacked and robbed. The most famous pirates are legendary adventure figures, some becoming known as "the scourge of the seven seas".
