Mary Tudor was quite an ugly woman, with bad depressions. She was mentally and physically (bad stomach pains) unstable, and had a phantom pregnancy, as she needed an heir to keep England Catholic. (She was a bit loony)!

---------------- There is a great deal of propoganda produced saying Mary Tudor (also known as Bloody Mary) was ugly and crazy. By the standards of her day, when she was young, she was considered quite beautiful and a real catch for any royal. Portraits of her reveal that she was quite striking. Links to her portraits can be found below. The Venetian Ambassador to King Henry's court wrote this about Mary:

"She is of spare and delicate frame, quite unlike her father, who was tall and stout; nor does she resemble her mother, who, if not tall, was nevertheless bulky. Her face is well formed, as shown by her features and lineaments, and as seen by her portraits. When younger she was considered, not merely tolerably handsome, but of beauty exceeding mediocrity...Her eyes are so piercing that they inspire not only respect, but fear in those on whom she fixes them"

Part of the notion she was "ugly" comes from a different view of what beauty is. What the Court of Henry VIII thought of as beautiful would differ from what is considered beautiful in Hollywood today.

Because of Mary's extreme Catholic beliefs and her actions in suppressing Protestants, when she died there was a great deal written to discredit her. One way to do this is to call a woman ugly and crazy.

She did suffer from depression and had a phantom pregnancy, but these should be seen in the context of the times. While a young princess, after her parents' divorce, Mary was shunned and removed from the Royal court. This would have been devastating. She was raised as a devout Catholic and suddenly her faith was no longer allowed. Her father and brother promoted Protestantism, her mother virtually rejected her when she entered a convent and withdrew from public life. Mary was alone and adrift with basically her faith for comfort.

When she came to the throne, she became desperate to produce an heir that would keep England Catholic. If she didn't her Protestant sister, Elisabeth would come to power, and all of Mary's work would be undone. Life was not easy for Mary and towards the end of her life, she was unwell, depressed and this certainly affected how she looked.
