Numerous factors influence physical characteristics of a stream ecosystem which in turn affect the biological ones. Seasonal fluctuations of organic matter input into stream channels and it's accumulation can dramatically change hydrological characteristics of streams. We estimated changes of hydrological parameters of a coastal plain stream on three dates (June 29, November 1, and December 8), using continuous salt release and conductivity measurements. Hydrological characteristics were determined using One-Dimensional Transport with Inflow and Storage (OTIS-P) model. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the storage zone to that of the stream (As/A) was 0.063 in June, while the ratios were considerably higher in November (0.281) and December (0.286) due to the accumulated leaf litter in the stream channel. On the other hand, the longitudinal dispersion coefficient (D) was highest in June (0.276 m2/sec), followed by December (0.158 m2/sec) and November (0.025 m2/sec). The storage residence time was 18 min in June, while they were a lot longer in November (31 min) and December (164 min). Changing physical characteristics of streams (storage zone size and dispersion coefficient) due to the natural fluctuation of organic matter input leads to chemical changes of streams and eventually affects biological processes in stream ecosystems.
