Illiteracy

-Not only are there few schools, those few schools are far and generally populated by boys as the old-fashioned approach of girls being 'domesticated'. So education for girls in villages is tough.

You can also add that with illiteracy:

-HIV spreads due to lack of knowledge

-Lack of adequate knowledge about birth-control or obsession to have a male child - couples have more children than they can handle leaving the boys to be favoured over the girls

-Cast system and other such obsolete ideas exist - so people believe that so-and-so caste should be favoured and the other ignored

-Only recently has agricultural methods being taught to farmers, till then most didn't know how to economically handle their fields

-Lack of knowledge of ways to complain when they get cheated. Think of the Kidney Scams where they were forcefully operated upon, illegally. Or land disputes where they get cheated out of acres of land by cooperation's due to ignorance.

Also, lack of opportunity in a village. Which results in those few educated villagers moving to the cities and no one comes back to help the village so it remains stuck, unable to progress.

Also, write a couple of positive points, so it doesn't seem anti-village. Things like they have a panchayat sort of system among themselves and this is beneficial as they don't need to depend on the Indian judicial system which is groaning under the weight of several court cases. Also a sense of community is there, highly protective of their community, less stress, more simplistic, and they manage to preserve their way of life and so on.

Hope this helps. Best of luck. :)

Sometimes they needed to consult the oracle through her priestess, either individually or as a village.
