Which county is Stockport in?

Most people now say Stockport is in Greater Manchester, along with Rochdale, Oldham etc but it was originally in Cheshire before Greater Manchester Borough was formed. I would stick to the original roots and say Cheshire :) Hope this helped! Stockport lies within the historic county boundaries of Cheshire but not in Cheshire's administrative boundaries. Since 1974 Stockport has been a Metropolitan Borough of the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester was created to enhance and provide a harmonious local government of the built up areas around South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire. The creation of Greater Manchester did not intent to alter the historic county boundaries of Cheshire or persuade local people to alter their loyalties to Cheshire- this was confirmed by the government at the time. Stockport therefore lies within the ancient County Boundaries of Cheshire that were created in the 12th Century. For modern administrative reasons it forms part of Greater Manchester (note it is not part of the city of Manchester). Many people either refer to Stockport as in Cheshire, Greater Manchester or Both- all of which are correct. Cheshire is also the postal county of Stockport.
