It can have something to do with stress, hormones (something wrong like a cyst or something on an ovary) or too much exercise.

Phase 1: menstrual flow consists of blood and tissue cells released from the thickened lining of the uterus. Phase 2: hormones cause the lining of the uterus to thicken in phase two. Phase 3: hormones produced by the ovaries continue to cause an increase in the thickness of the uterine lining during phase three.
There are a few reasons your period can be late 1) Pregnancy 2) Stress 3) just having an erratic cycle. if you miss your period altogether, you may want to have a pregnancy test done and/or see your doctor to find out why your periods have stopped. Pregnancy is controlled by 4 hormones in the female body, all of which respond to the amount of stress that the body is under. When the body begins to be under stress, the hormones are also put under this stress, causing them to not release at the proper time. If this happens, they will just be released later, causing a late period. It could also be that your period is not late, but rather missing. If you have had sex within the last month, pregnancy could be the reason. When a sperm and egg join, a hormone is released by the female body to stop estrogen, a hormone that controls the period in a female. This is to keep the body from releasing another egg, resulting in multiple pregnancies at different times, which would endanger both babies. A period is actually the result of your uterine lining shedding, which would support the baby if the female was pregnant. If the egg is not fertilized by a certain day in your cycle, hormones in your body are released to shed the lining, as it becomes toxic to the female. If you are pregnant, the reason your period is not coming is because that uterine lining is currently supporting a developing child.
There are several reasons that this could happen... 1. A drastic change in weight can cause a missed period due to the hormones that are stored in fat being released into your body during that weightloss. 2. Stress can cause a missed period. 3. Have you run a blood test to be sure that you are not pregnant? My family does not test positive for pregnancy through urine tests. We have to go to the doctor's office and have blood tests ran to determine if we are. This is not uncommon for women, and may be the case for you too!
