The phenomenon in which different compounds have the same molecular and structural formula, but different geometry due to different spatial arrangement of groups with respect to a double bond or a ring is called as geometric isomerism.

Geometric isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different arrangements of their nucleons in the nucleus. They have the same atomic number but different mass numbers due to differences in how protons and neutrons are arranged.

This do occur when there is present a multiple bond (double bond) between two carbon atoms. For example in the molecule say 2-Butene (CH3-CH=CH-CH3) there is a case of geometrical isomerism.
