Best Answer

1) Convergent plates move towards one another

2) Divergent plates separate from each other

3) Alfred Wegener founded Pangaea, a super continent that was supposedly all of the seven continents put together

4) Transform plates slide together in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal way

5) Every year, the seven continents move approximately 2 centimeters away from each other

6) Earthquakes are caused from transform plates

7) When the divergent plate process occurs, it leaves mountains or volcanoes and lava could possibly come out

8) Some parts of the earth are either splitting or coming near each other

9) Scientists believe that in a few million years, the earth will be another Pangaea

10) Other proof that Pangaea existed was that there's been fossils of ancient animals and plants in different continents, like the mammal, the Lystrosaurus

* Can be either continental or oceanic

* Collisions occur at plate boundaries

* Are either continental-continental, continental-oceanic or oceanic-oceanic. The hyphen refers to collision

* Oceanic crust is denser than continental crust

* When plates collide they are known as convergent boundaries. When they separate they are known as divergent boundaries. When they slide past each other parallelly they are known are conservative boundaries

  • Earth seems to be the only planet in the solar system with tectonic plates.
  • Their effects (mountains) are the cause of some glaciers.
  • There are around 30 tectonic plates, the largest being the Pacific Plate.
  • Tectonic plates can converge, diverge, or move alongside each other.
  • An oceanic plate will subduct into the mantle when colliding with a continental plate.
  • Mountain ranges result from continental to continental plate collisions.
  • Continental plates are thicker than oceanic plates.
  • Oceanic plates are more dense than continental plates.
  • Oceanic plates are basaltic in nature.
  • Continental plates are granitic in nature.
  • Friction between plates is the most common cause of earthquakes.
  • Tectonic plates move on average at the same speed as fingernail growth.
  • The Pacific Plate is shrinking.
  • Uplift caused by tectonic plate collisions can cause changes in global climate.
  • Most volcanism is a direct result of plate subduction and melting of crust.
  • Oceanic crust is rarely older than 200 million years.
  • Some rocks of the continental crust are over 4 billion years old.
  • Tectonic plates are composed of the crust and the uppermost layer of the mantle.
  • Tectonic plates are thickest over mountain ranges.
  • Tectonic plates are thinnest at divergent plate boundaries.
  • Africa and Europe were once connected to North America.
  • Seafloor spreading and continental drift are part of plate tectonics.
  • Heat from Earth's interior is the source of energy for plate tectonics.
  • Earth's plates float and move on top of the layer of the mantle known as the asthenosphere.
  • Plate tectonics in combination with the weather account for the rock cycle.
  • The mid-ocean ridge, a divergent plate boundary, is the longest continuous mountain range on the Earth.
