A substance can any material, solution, or mixture, such as water, salt, glue, or gunpowder.
A pure substance is one that contains the same element or compound throughout. Salt is a pure substance, but when added to water, it becomes a mixture. Gunpowder is basically a mixture of three pure substances (compounds).
There are many different kinds of substances. Substances are formed whenever chemicals come together to create a new material, so there are thousands of substances being formed and being used every day. A few of the most common substances are water, sugar, and table salt.
Examples of substances (if you think that substance and compound are synonyms): table alt, alcohol, potassium chloride, beryllium oxide, calcium carbide, sodium carbonate, nitric acid, benzene etc.
ammonia, milk, baking soda are just a few :)
A basic substance has a pH greater than 7.
An acidic substance has a pH less than 7.
A substance with a pH of 7 is neutral.
Examples: sodium chloride, silver nitrate, ammonium phosphate, benzene, lithium fluoride, etc.
