Some common German folkways are as follows; when a new building is completed a tree is placed on the top beam for good luck, the celebration of Summer festivals where they perform traditional folk dances, Maypole dances on the first day of May (and they have bonfires the night before on Walpurgisnacht), while Christmas gifts are often given, Santa Claus (or Nikolaus) does not bring them, but rather, he comes on the 6th of December bringing fruit and candy. He is accompanied by Krampus (the devil) who whips bad people. On new years it is traditional to give people pigs for luck, though not real ones. Often a Marzipan pig is gifted. These are just some of the many folkways common in the area.
