the Maya's religious beliefs led them to make impressive achievements in science. they built large observatories, or buildings from which people would could study the sky, so their priests could watch the stars and plan the best times for religious festivals. With the knowledge they gained from astronomy, the Maya developed two calenders. one with 365 days, guided farming activities, such as planting and harvesting. this calender was more accurate than the one used in Europe at that time. The Maya also had a 260 day calender that they used for keeping track of religious events. the Maya were able to measure time accurately partly because they were skilled mathematicians.

Mayans made a number of scientific advances, especially in the Classic Period, from 300 - 900 AD. They were very aware of celestial movement, using the information to determine the best times for planting and were able to predict solar eclipses. Important buildings were situated according to equinoxes - shadows fall in auspicious ways.

We know of no major breakthroughs in mathematics or astronomy made by the Mayans. However, very few Mayan or Inca records have survived the centuries or the ravages of the Spanish Conquisatores who ruled the area.
