Prior to the 2008 season, the 2001 New York Yankees lost the first 2 games of the ALDS to the Oakland Athletics at Yankee Stadium and then won the next three games to win the Series. This is the only time that a team that lost the first two games of a League Divisional Series at home has come back to win the Series since MLB added the Divisional Series to the playoffs in 1995.
As of the 2008 World Series, that was the New York Yankees in 1996 who lost the first two games at home to the Atlanta Braves and then came back to win four straight.
The 1985 Kansas City Royals were the first to do the trick, as they lost their first two games at home to the St. Louis Cardinals, then won 2 of 3 in St. Louis, and the final two in Kansas City. The Yankees of '96 were certainly the first to lose the first two home games, and then sweept the next four.
It has happened 11 times. The comeback teams were:
• The 1921 New York Giants over the New York Yankees, 5-3.
• The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers over the New York Yankees, 4-3.
• The 1956 New York Yankees over the Brooklyn Dodgers, 4-3.
• The 1958 New York Yankees over the Milwaukee Braves, 4-3.
• The 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers over the Minnesota Twins, 4-3.
• The 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates over the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3.
• The 1978 New York Yankees over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2.
• The 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers over the New York Yankees, 4-2.
• The 1985 Kansas City Royals over the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3.
• The 1986 New York Mets over the Boston Red Sox, 4-3.
• The 1996 New York Yankees over the Atlanta Braves, 4-2.
That has happened only once in MLB and that was in 2004 when the Red Sox defeated the Yankess, 4 games to 3, in the ALCS after being down 3 games to 0.
The Boston Red Sox came back down 0-3 in the series against the New York Yankees to win the series in 2004 in the ALCS. It is the only time this has ever happened in MLB history.
Braves did it in 1996

The National League Championship Series is the Game against the winner of the two final playoff teams of the national league.
