At that time, the french society was divided in 3 parts: the nobles, the clergy (religious people like priest and monks), and the rest of the population (called le Tiers-Etat in french), who were mostly peasants. The two first parts had a lot of privileges. they payed less taxes (althought they were the richest), they were the only ones to have the right to hunt and fish, etc. The Tiers-Etat were very poor and so, they didn't have food, and the king didn't try to help them, no one cared. They were not pleased so they beheaded the king and his wife, and they killed a big part of the nobles. :)
