Spain remained neutral during World War II.
The Spanish Civil War had gone on from 1936-1939 and was quite a debilitating war to both the Spanish economy and its people. Although Franco, Spain's dictator at the time, was sympathetic to the Axis Powers (Germany and Italy had helped him in the Spanish Civil War), Spain had not yet recovered to join the war before 1943. At that time, America and the other Allies were beginning to make headway in their campaigns and urged Spain to stay out of the war or face post-War occupation when the Allies emerged victorious. Franco agreed to remain neutral so that he could remain in power. (He stayed in power until his death in 1975.)
