Contrary to popular misconception, the US Constitution said that anyone that was a member of one of the states as of the adoption of the US Constitution (Sept. 17, 1787) was eligible for federal office including President. Since Hamilton was a member of NYS in spring of 1782, he was eligible to be President...though he NEVER expressed an interest in theat. He was a founding father and the chief of staff to General Washington in 1777 and President George Washington in 1789. In total that relationship lasted over 22 years!
