The twenty-seven books of the New Testament can be divided into four groups based on the type and intent of the writings. 1) The first four books, the gospels, are accounts of the life, ministry, and the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Matthew's account is from a decidedly Jewish perspective, Mark and Luke were written more for a Greco/Roman audience, and John's gospel, the most "spiritual" of the four, is of particular value for those who are strongly considering becoming, or already are, disciples of Christ. 2) The Acts of the Apostles is a history of the establishment and growth of the first-century church. 3) The "epistles" are letters sent to early churches, individuals or groups of disciples, and contain words of doctrine, encouragement and correction. The Apostle Paul is generally accepted as the author of all the epistles from Romans through Philemon (known collectively as the "Pauline epistles"); these letters were written to specific churches or individuals. Hebrews (an epistle especially meant to benefit and edify Jewish converts to Christianity) is of uncertain authorship, and the "general epistles," authored by James, Peter, John and Jude, are intended for a broad Christian audience. 4) Revelation is a book of prophecy concerning the fate of the saints in particular and the world in general. Apparently written by the apostle John while in exile on the island of Patmos, it unfolds as a series of visions filled with mysterious imagery, and is often considered a companion book to the Old Testament prophecies of Daniel and Ezekiel.
