Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and another metal (usually copper). The alloy is a mixture of the 2 metals, not a compound. To be called sterling silver it needs to have at least 92.5 percent silver.

Pure silver is too soft to be useful (such as in silverware or jewelry). The alloy has the advantage of being stronger than pure silver. See related Wikipedia article.
