No, it is not a good idea to use a ball point pen to label your CDs. The whole data stored inside the CD or DVD might get destroyed. These soft tipped permanent markers, ball pens and sharpies are harmful as the ink from the markers penetrates into the CD or DVD and can damage the whole data. I would suggest you to use either a water-based permanent felt tip marker or sticker type labels which are fit for CD-R labeling.
