Yes you can run threaded gas fittings in any wall. Just no mechanical joints, (unions, flared fittings ect.). Just make sure you test the line with air. Our company tests at 20lbs and usually leave it overnight to see if there's a drop. This is plenty because you gas line usally only produces a couple pounds of pressure or less. Use Teflon tape and pipe dope on every joint.
BEFORE using "Teflon" tape make sure it the type approved for the type of "gas" your using. The white Teflon tape is NOT approved in many places as approved for gas service

The grab ring is what physically secures the tubing inside the fitting by biting into the tubing. The angle of the grab ring teeth causes the "bite" to be greater as the tube pressure or load increases, up to a point. At some point, the grab ring will usually bite off the tube or the grab ring will invert, allowing the tube to become disconnected.

Use a pair of plyers and two small pieces of cork to grab the threaded pipe while you rotate the female fitting. Also, if you don't need the threaded piece anymore, you can use a whole cork inserted into the threaded pipe with a bit of apoxy or super glue.

No. Additionally, welded socket joints do not receive internal purging with an inert gas (i.e. argon).
The pan has to be removed and a new threaded nut welded on the inside of the pan. On an '88 I would just change the pan. After market pans aren't too expensive.
