Comic Book artist get paid more money if they draw and ink their work but they also get paid more money if there art is very good and detailed. They also get paid more if they write and illustrate their own comic which in most cases it doesen't happen too often. Pay rate is all over some make a very good living off of comics others not too well it's hard to make a living off of comic books now a days with films and Video Games being more and more popular and with more comic book companies closing down. So comics don't sell half of what they used to but there are still some comic book creators who make good money. A way to make it big is if your comic becomes a cartoon, movie, video game, card or even a toy. In which you might know doesen't happen very often especially with the way technology has advance since the early 50's. Where most art films are 3D CGI films now a days Cartoons aren't being used anymore that much. So yeah you don't get paid that much really you will be lucky enough to survive as a comic book artist best bet is to either go into game art design or animation design or even design novels because those are the hotfield for art these days.
A Mangaka doesn't get paid salary. They get paid for whatever they sold.
The average Mangaka works roughly 8-10 hours a day. Generally they have to give in 20-40 pages of manga a month so it's one compleated page every day (not including the time it takes to write the story). If the editor doesn't like it the Mangaka has to re-do it. Also the extra art like cover art or graphic books.
You don't get an hourly rate but a contract based partially on sales, the average contract is usually for a beginner 500$ per 20 pg's.
Assuming it takes 5 hours per page about 5$ per hour.
If the Managaka's just starting then they're looking at self publishing which is Doujinshi. In that case they make what they sell after paying their own printing fee.
They have to then calculate their costs; time to make the comic, materials used, paying assistances, ect. ect. ect.
In the end the profit is compleatly dependent on the Mangaka.
There is no set salary for manga artists... Your wage depends on alot of different things such as: the popularity of your artwork, the company you work for/ with, eg. Tokyopop will probably give you a higher wage than darkhorse.. Or something like that.. I'm not sure if that's the correct name,, lol.. But,, to be honest... I really don't think the salary amount is neccesary; to be in the manga/ illustrating buissness in the first place is worth more than any wage,, doing something you love is priceless!
It honestly depends, the average writer or artist can make 80$ a page. So it can end up they make as little as 20k a year. Most likely they have some deal in place where they get a back end portion of sales which can bring there rate up. Top artist and writers can make up to or in exceses of 300-400$ per page plus back end or royalties.
Also you have to consider that if someone is doing a comic and selling outside the normal brick and mortar store then they may have a high revenue rate of income coming to them.
