Many factors count when considering vintage Guitars. Number one is the condition. A mint example might be worth twice (or 3 times) as much as one that has wear. Is it all original? What has been replaced? Typically, frets wear out, potentiometers (tone & volume knobs) wear out. The finish might be painted over, refinished, or original. Original, even beat up is almost always worth more than a refin. Pickups might be replaced. An original case might be worth $300 - $1200 or more depending on the case. Number two is - how desirable is the guitar? Vintage Gibson Les Pauls can be upwards of $100,000 for a desirable example. 1950's Fender Strats and Telecasters might be $20,000 or more. A weak economy drives down prices, but there is still demand for quality vintage guitars. Finally, a 1967 Telecaster might be offered for sale for $5,000 to $10,000 or so based on condition. A celebrity owned guitar carries a premium, but it depends if they are on tour, and other factors.

Just buy the Fender instead of the Squier. From the description, you're probably looking at a Fender '72 Telecaster Deluxe, with two "wide range" humbuckers and four control knobs. You can modify a Squier, but the cost of the modifications and the parts will probably exceed the cost of the guitar. And there is never any guarantee that the resulting sound will be good until you've already paid for and completed the modification. Also, a Squier depreciates in value pretty much the second you take it out of the store. A Fender, even a Mexican one, will hold its value better. When in doubt, just buy the guitar that already has the sound and feel you want.
