There are 48 volcanoes around New Zealand.

Actually there are over 60 active, dormant and extinct volcanoes in New Zealand, and 48 in the Auckland region.

There are two currently active volcanoes in New Zealand, Ruapehu and White Island, and another, Ngaruahoe, that has been active in the last 50 years. New Zealand is very volcanic, especially the North Island. Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand is built on about 27 different extinct volcanoes. There is a lot of volcanoes in New Zealand.

White island is more or less in permanent eruption, or at least active.

Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngaruahoe, and Taranaki are all dormant. Mayor island is probably dormant.

There are no active or dormant volcanoes in the South island.

There are a little over 50 recognized volcanic craters in the Auckland Volcanic Field.

There may be more, but now concealed by ejecta from a younger eruption, or lying underwater.

The earliest one is that of Onepoto, about 248 000 years ago. The most recent was that of Rangitoto, about 600 years ago. Eruptions have tended to become larger as time goes on, with Rangitoto contributing about 60% of the Field's total ejecta.

The Auckland Regional Council has produced an "Auckland Volcanic Field Contingency plan", which provides suggestions for responding to such an emergency.

Many dozens would be the number of extinct volcanoes in New Zealand.

On the Banks Peninsula complex, there are several, and again further south, there is a intermittent line of volcanoes running close to the coast from Oamaru, to south of Dunedin. The Kakanui Range, running inland between Oamaru and Palmerston, has another dozen perhaps.

And, these geographic features are even more common in the North Island, from the Central volcanic Group and running right up to Northland.
