How long does it take to learn to play the viola?

To sight read grade 2-3 maybe 4-5 years most.

It is still the case that many violists begin playing the instrument after getting their start on the violin. But these days it is also possible to begin directly on the viola. It just depends on finding a teacher in your area who specializes in beginning violists.
There are many opinions as to whether it is better to start on violin first, or on viola directly.
In the end, what matters is getting the best teacher you can find, and putting in consistent effort toward your progress.
Some violists start with the Suzuki method, and can be as young as four years old. Many other students start in their public school music programs, around the 5th grade.
Others switch from violin to viola as teenagers or even in college. Adult beginners sometimes start after retirement, in their 70s or 80s!
There is no perfect age to become a violist; the instrument will always welcome you!
