Chromosomes are located in the nuclei (singlular form: nucleus) of each cell in your body.
In the nucleus of each cell in the human body (excluding gametes [23]) there are 46 chromosomes, these chromosomes consist of lots of different genes that all join up together (A to T, G to C) and each gene has a code for a certain part of your body.
Before mitosis can happen, the chromosomes inside the nucleus must separate to form identical pairs. This sets the stage for each of the daughter cells to have a copy of the DNA to replicate the full sequence.
